What is massage?
According to the Victorian Government’s Better Health Channel, “Massage therapy is the practice of kneading or manipulating a person’s muscles and other soft-tissue in order to improve their well-being or health. It is a form of manual therapy that includes holding, moving, and applying pressure to the muscles, tendons, ligaments and fascia.” The site goes on to define Aromatherapy Massage as “the addition of essential oils to the massage oil for their particular therapeutic properties. For example, the scent of sandalwood is thought to reduce nervous tension.”
Massage is increasingly being offered for the management of a wide range of illnesses including:
- chronic low back pain
- anxiety
- stress
- soft tissue injuries
- high blood pressure
- insomnia

- fibromyalgia
- headaches
Massage is a powerful addition to our health toolbox. Aside from the therapeutic benefits mentioned above, massage produces a feeling of deep relaxation and calm, the result of a reduction in the levels of stress hormones as well as the release of endorphins – brain chemicals that produce feelings of well-being.
